How does the ticket system work?

A limited number of tickets are given out at the beginning of each session.

How long are interviews?

The 10 minute Gateway assessments are to assess your situation. This may lead to an appointment or referral, or information being given.

Is the CAB the only place to access advice?

No, we run several outreach projects.For details of our projects click here. The drop-in sessions are run on a first-come first-served basis, so it is advisable to arrive early. General information only can be accessed by emailing towerhamlets@eastendcab.org.uk

Can I get an earlier appointment at an outreach project?

If you are a patient registered at any of the surgeries where we have outreach projects, an earlier appointment can be made by calling one of the surgeries.

What type of advice do you offer?

We advise on debt, welfare benefits, immigration, employment, housing, consumer issues, education and family issues.

Can I book an appointment without attending a Gateway assessment?


No, appointments can only be booked after a Gateway assessment or via telephone advice.

Why can’t I be seen immediately?

We are a charitable organisation relying on volunteers. The Gateway assessment guarantees that we can help as many people as possible.

If I have a simple query, do I need to queue for an assessment?


Simple queries can be dealt with by accessing Advice Guide, an online resource from Citizens Advice. Please click here to access Advice Guide, or come into the bureau to access the Assisted Information System. If you require assisted information, please ask at reception.

How do I get an appointment with a specialist adviser?

For appointments with a specialist through telephone advice or gateway session, you need to be eligible for free legal aid.

Do I need to be a Tower Hamlets resident to gain advice?

You need to live or work in Tower Hamlets in order to access advice services. If you are not a resident or worker in the borough, you can get assisted information advice or specialist appointments after being assessed at a gateway session or via telephone advice.
